A failed capacitor, a dirty coil, a low charge or a faulty sensor are repairs — not reasons to buy a new system. We fix the fault in front of us, and we only raise replacement when the numbers genuinely stop making sense for you.

Heat pumps fail differently from furnaces — and most of what looks terminal isn’t. Tell us the symptom and we’ll usually have a good idea before we arrive.
Not cooling in summer
Running but the house won’t come down — often a low charge, a failed capacitor or a reversing valve stuck in heating.
Not heating in winter
Blowing cool air when it should be warm. Usually the reversing valve, a sensor fault, or the unit stuck in a defrost loop.
Outdoor unit iced over
A little frost is normal in winter. A solid block of ice is not — it means the defrost cycle isn’t working.
Electricity bill has jumped
Usually the backup electric heat carrying the house because the heat pump isn’t keeping up. Expensive, and fixable.
Error code or flashing light
Modern inverter units self-diagnose. We read the code properly instead of guessing — it often points straight at a cheap part.
Short-cycling
Starting and stopping every few minutes. Charge, sensors, airflow or a control fault — rarely the compressor.
Outdoor unit rattling or humming
New noises usually mean a fan motor, a loose blade or worn bearings. Cheap now, expensive if it takes the compressor with it.
One room or zone not working
On a multi-head system a single indoor unit failing is normally that head or its line — not the whole system.

The Questions Everyone Asks Us
The things people worry about before they pick up the phone — answered honestly.
Often it isn’t — and this is the single most common reason people call us. A heat pump is a more complex machine than a furnace, and a lot of companies would rather quote a replacement than spend the time diagnosing an inverter board, a reversing valve or a sensor fault.
Most of what we see is repairable: capacitors, contactors, fan motors, sensors, defrost boards, charge issues and control faults. If yours genuinely is at end of life we’ll show you why, give you the repair cost and a free estimate for replacement, and leave you to decide.
$119 plus tax. That brings a Red Seal certified technician to your door, and it covers the visit whether your system turns out to need a tune-up or a diagnosis.
We check the system is running properly before we start a maintenance — so you’re never paying for a tune-up on a system that already has a fault. If we find one, we’ll tell you there and then that the visit becomes a diagnostic instead. Diagnostic time is billed by the hour, and troubleshooting is usually done inside that first hour.
Once we know what’s wrong we quote the repair, and you decide. The visit fee covers the technician’s time finding the fault — it’s separate from the price of the repair.
If the system genuinely needs replacing rather than repairing, the estimate for a new one is free.
Yes. A lot of systems went in across BC between 2021 and 2024 during the rebate push, and not every installer is still around — or still answering. We take those systems on regardless of who fitted them.
We’ll also tell you honestly whether the original install was done properly, because a surprising number of the faults we find are commissioning problems rather than failures: an undercharged system, a badly sited outdoor unit, or a control never set up correctly.
Quite possibly. Most manufacturers cover parts for 5–10 years, and labour separately for a shorter period — and that parts warranty usually transfers with the equipment, not the installer.
Tell us the brand and roughly when it went in and we’ll check before we quote anything. If a part is covered, you shouldn’t be paying for it — we’d rather tell you that than sell you one.
Usually because the backup electric heat is carrying the house. When a heat pump can’t keep up — low charge, a sensor fault, a defrost problem or a control set up wrong — the auxiliary heat quietly takes over, and it costs several times as much to run.
It’s one of the most common faults we find, it rarely shows up as an obvious breakdown, and it’s normally a repair rather than a replacement. If your bill jumped without your habits changing, it’s worth a look.
A light frost in cold weather is completely normal — the unit runs a defrost cycle every so often to clear it. What isn’t normal is a solid block of ice, ice that never clears, or ice building up in summer.
That points to a defrost control fault, a sensor, low refrigerant or restricted airflow. Running it that way strains the compressor, so it’s worth catching early.
